The Board of Directors, Partners, Management and entire staff of Vesta Healthcare Partners announce the transition of the Chairman of our Board of Directors, Emeritus Professor Oladipo Olujimi Akinkugbe, CFR MD DPhil FRCP NNOM Hon DSc who departed this life on Monday, 15 June 2020 at the age of 86 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Late Professor Akinkugbe was an Emeritus Professor of Medicine, University of Ibadan, and one of Nigeria’s most respected and distinguished academics and physicians. He was a vibrant and versatile leader within and outside medicine; qualities that earned him several key roles including Principal and Foundation Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Foundation Chairman of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of council of the University of Port-Harcourt, Chairman of the National Implementation Communications on Review of Higher Education, World Health Organisation Expert on Health Manpower, Council Member on Health Research and Secretary to the Technical Discussions on
Universities and Health for All initiative.
He was a Fellow of West African College of Physicians, a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Sciences, Fellow of Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh and an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College Oxford. He has served as President of the Nigerian Hypertension Society, the Nigerian Association of Nephrology, and was a member of the Medical Research Society of Great Britain and the International Society for Hypertension. He was a Visiting Professor of Medicine at Harvard University, University of Cape Town and University of Oxford.
In 1989, he received the Searle Distinguished Research Award for his contributions to Hypertension in black populations and in 2004, the Boehringer Ingelheim Award of the International Society of Hypertension. He has been awarded Honorary Doctorate degrees from six Nigerian universities, including Ibadan and has been conferred with traditional chieftaincy titles from Ile-Ife, Ondo, Ibadan and Ijebu-Igbo.
To us at Vesta, he was more than a deeply insightful Chairman, he was a real father; an unending fount of wisdom, full of encouragement and refreshing strategic perspectives that guided the Firm’s overall success. He will be sorely missed.
We use this opportunity to commiserate with his family, friends and colleagues both nationally and internationally as well as the wider community of medicine and academia on the loss of this great man.
